WHAT DOES AN ARTWORK SOUND LIKE - TATE BRITAIN — MARIE SMITH

Since August 2022, I have been an Artist in Residence in Tate Interpretation. For this residency, I decided to explore sound and spoken word by reflecting on Tina Campt’s theory Listening to Images. Campus theory allows us the explore how we read images beyond the intuitive - seeing, physical and psychic and provides a space for the counterintuitive - listening.

The outcome of the residency was a workshop called What is the frequency of Tate Britain. The first part was a workshop that took place in November 2022 with Tate Collective Producers where we explored key artworks from SIXTY YEARS: THE UNFINISHED CONVERSATION (Room 29) which is explores the evolving identity of the Tate Britain collection.

The workshop responses can be listened to and are accessible via QR codes in Room 29, until April 2023. You can find examples via Tate’s Soundcloud.

The recordings provided a further prompt for the second part of workshop that I facilitated and was open to the public as part of the Late at Tate Lynette Yiadom-Boakye on Friday 2 December 2022.

A handout was created to enable the public to participate and create a dialogue with Campt’s theory whilst engaging with the collection during the Late at Tate Britain event. The public was asked to write, draw and reflect on their experiences as they engaged with Camp’s theory. Segments from Novembers workshop with the Tate Collective Producers were played during Late at Tate in SIXTY YEARS: THE UNFINISHED CONVERSATION (Room 29).
